I had the privilege of visiting Vegas Valley Adventist Academy recently on their last day of Week of Prayer. What a thrill to watch the 91 students from TK through 10th grade participate in the service—reciting memory verses, praying, and singing in the praise team. They were all actively involved in the service and listened with rapt attention as speaker Larry Unterseher presented tangible illustrations on the topic “It’s All About Jesus.”

Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is observed annually in May to celebrate the contributions that generations of AAPIs have made to American history, society, and culture. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

Asian-Pacific Ministries at the Pacific Union Conference works with the seven local conference coordinators and group representatives in serving 25 language groups and supporting the outreach, ministry, and growth of Asian-Pacific churches throughout the Pacific Union. VicLouis Arreola III has been coordinator of Asian-Pacific Ministries for the Pacific Union since 2011, and he now serves in the role of vice president. He also serves as coordinator of Multi-Ethnic Ministries for the North American Division.

National Nurses Week honors their contributions and sacrifices and reminds us to thank the medical professionals who keep us healthy. It’s celebrated between May 6, National Nurses Day, and May 12, the birthdate of celebrated nurse Florence Nightingale.
