Almost 800 delegates of the Southeastern California Conference (SECC) gathered together on Sunday, Oct. 1, for its Third Quinquennial Session. Jonathan Park was elected as SECC president. Park began serving as president in September 2021 when then-president Sandra Roberts was tapped to serve as the executive secretary of the Pacific Union Conference.
Patricia Marruffo was elected to serve as the SECC executive secretary. Marruffo began serving in this capacity in October 2021 after Park vacated the position. Verlon Strauss was returned to serve his third term as SECC treasurer. Elizer Sacay was also reelected for his third term as the vice president for Asian Pacific Ministries.
Robert Edwards was reelected for a second term as vice president for Black Ministries. Yohalmo Saravia was returned for his second term as the vice president for Hispanic Ministries.
Before business began, the morning started with worship. “Connecting Through Christ” was the theme that guided the day. “The global pandemic underscored the importance of connections with one another. It also highlighted the importance of Christ as the one through whom we can all connect in a spirit of love,” said Marruffo.
The theme was displayed throughout the service by the Pathfinders who prayed in eight different languages. It was heard in the music led by La Sierra University church, Loma Linda University church, the Hosanna Singers, and Redlands Children’s Ministry. It was felt in the percussion instruments as the Black Ministries Area-Wide Drum Corp made their debut during the session.
“There was a worship experience and feeling of the presence of the Holy Spirit that guided it all through,” said Sacay.
The delegates were challenged by a moving word from Alfonzo Greene, pastor from Mt. Rubidoux church. Attendees were reminded to not just connect through Christ but to be like Christ. “Jesus was willing to be misunderstood by insiders so that He could reach outsiders,” said Greene in his homily.
In addition to electing the six officers and the members to the executive and bylaws committees, the business of the day included several uplifting reports on how God has been moving over the last five years. “I felt that the delegates were inspired. It was more about God’s work in our conference rather than electing the officers,” said Park as he reflected on the day.
One of the initiatives that was introduced concerned the Center of Discipleship and Evangelism, a space where members can learn about being a disciple of Christ with fellow members of the conference. The center will launch officially in January with a rally with Ty Gibson.
“For me, the highlight of the day was when the president challenged the delegates to make discipleship and sharing Jesus the center of our mission,” said Saravia.
After the officers were voted in, there was a blessing given by Karen Martell, SECC prayer ministries coordinator. “Her words were so touching and inspiring to me, they almost made me cry. I was just impressed how she went through each component of our bodies—our eyes, ears, hands—and asked that they be blessed and used in a manner that glorifies God,” said Strauss.
“The overall meeting was soaked in the concept of connecting for the cause of Christ. The atmosphere was overwhelming with inspiration. We were truly inspired to connect!” said Edwards.

Sesión constituyente de SECC anima a delegados a conectarse a través de Cristo
Casi 800 delegados de Southeastern California Conference (SECC) se reunieron el domingo 1 de octubre para su Tercera Sesión Quinquenal. Jonathan Park fue elegido presidente de SECC. Park comenzó a servir como presidente en septiembre de 2021 cuando la entonces presidente Sandra Roberts fue elegida para servir como secretaria ejecutiva de la Pacific Union Conference.
Patricia Marruffo fue elegida para servir como secretaria ejecutiva de la SECC. Marruffo comenzó a ocupar ese cargo en octubre de 2021 después de que Park dejara vacante el puesto. Verlon Strauss fue elegido para cumplir su tercer mandato como tesorero de SECC. Elizer Sacay también fue reelegido para su tercer mandato como vicepresidente de ministerio de Asia y el Pacífico.
Robert Edwards fue reelegido para un segundo mandato como vicepresidente del ministerio de negros. Yohalmo Saravia fue reelegido para su segundo mandato como vicepresidente del ministerio hispano.
Antes de que comenzaran la sesión, la mañana comenzó con adoración. «Conectando a través de Cristo» fue el tema que guió el día. «La pandemia mundial puso de relieve la importancia de las conexiones entre nosotros. También destacó la importancia de Cristo como aquel a través del cual todos podemos conectarnos en un espíritu de amor», dijo Marruffo.
El tema fue mostrado durante todo el servicio por los Conquistadores que oraron en ocho idiomas diferentes. Se escuchó en la música dirigida por la iglesia de La Sierra University, la iglesia de Loma Linda University, los Cantantes de Hosanna y el ministerio infantil de Redlands. Se sintió en los instrumentos de percusión cuando el Black Ministries Area-Wide Drum Corp hizo su debut durante la sesión.
«Hubo una experiencia de adoración y un sentimiento de la presencia del Espíritu Santo que lo dirigió a lo largo de todo», dijo Sacay.
Los delegados fueron desafiados por un conmovedor mensaje de Alfonzo Greene, pastor de la iglesia de Mt. Rubidoux. A los asistentes se les recordó que no solo se conectaran a través de Cristo, sino que fueran como Cristo. «Jesús estaba dispuesto a ser malinterpretado por los de adentro para poder alcanzar a los de afuera», dijo Greene en su mensaje.
Además de elegir a los seis funcionarios y a los miembros de los comités ejecutivo y de estatutos, los asuntos del día incluyeron varios informes edificantes sobre cómo Dios ha estado obrando en los últimos cinco años. «Sentí que los delegados estaban inspirados. Se trataba más de la obra de Dios en nuestra conferencia que de elegir a los oficiales», dijo Park mientras reflexionaba sobre el día.
Una de las iniciativas que se presentó se refería al Centro de Discipulado y Evangelismo, un espacio donde los miembros puedan aprender a ser discípulos de Cristo con otros miembros de la conferencia. El centro se lanzará oficialmente en enero con un mitin con Ty Gibson.
«Para mí, lo más destacado del día fue cuando el presidente desafió a los delegados a hacer del discipulado y el compartir a Jesús el centro de nuestra misión», dijo Saravia.
Después de que los oficiales fueron elegidos, Karen Martel, coordinadora de ministerios de oración de SECC, tuvo unas palabras de bendición. «Sus palabras fueron tan conmovedoras e inspiradoras que casi me hicieron llorar. Me impresionó cómo recorrió cada componente de nuestros cuerpos, nuestros ojos, oídos, manos, y pidió que fueran bendecidos y usados de una manera que glorifique a Dios», dijo Strauss.
«La reunión en general estuvo imbuída del concepto de conectarse por la causa de Cristo. El ambiente estaba lleno de inspiración. ¡Realmente nos inspiró conectarnos!», dijo Edwards.
