November 11, 2023, was a day of spiritual transformation for the Kaneohe church. In the presence of over 200 family and friends, five individuals took the plunge in the church’s “Blue Papaya” baptistry. Pastor Tim Nelson, instrumental in guiding these souls, reflected on the significance of the event and the deeper aspects of baptism.
From evangelistic campaign to baptism
Four of the five baptisms that took place were the direct result of an evangelistic campaign at Kaneohe. In order to give them time to work through any questions they may have had, Pastor Nelson studied with all five individuals and others in the weeks before the baptism. Nelson later reflected on the importance of giving people this time between the event and the actual baptism.
“I’m not a huge proponent of rushing a baptism to happen right after a big event because that ends up just being ‘emotional baptism.’ We want people to be baptized because of their walk with Jesus and relationship with Him, not just because of emotions,” shared Nelson. “We never want to rush people to get into the water. Sometimes we are so eager to get baptisms that we end up just getting a bunch of wet people instead of people who are truly understanding. Going through their experience and answering their questions is a very important step to take before we get them in the water.”
The perfect place to be baptized
Nestled in the church's garden area, the Blue Papaya has been a place of spiritual rebirths for four decades. “Part of the experience of getting baptized at Kaneohe is getting into the water itself,” said Nelson, “One of the water sources for the Blue Papaya is water directly from the mountain, and it is freezing. Every time you step in the water you gasp from the cold, but you also feel refreshed and alive. I like to think of it as a reminder of the sudden change that happens when you give your life to Jesus Christ. All of sudden, you feel so alive, and you almost can’t breathe because it feels so overwhelming. It adds a newness to your life. You’re still the same person, but there's this awakening that happens.”
As long as you understand that Jesus Christ paid the price and you're willing to go where He leads and you accept the price He paid, that is all you need for baptism.
Final thoughts
Pastor Nelson's insights can give us all something to think about. Whether we have been baptized, are going to be baptized, or are going to baptize someone else, we should all take careful consideration of the meaning behind this action. After all, it is only the first of many big steps we must take in our walk with Jesus. So, although having understanding is important, don’t wait to take that step. As Nelson says, “It is never too early or too late to accept Jesus Christ. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you get in the water. As long as you understand that Jesus Christ paid the price and you're willing to go where He leads and you accept the price He paid, that is all you need for baptism. If you have waited, don’t wait any more. You won’t know how good accepting Christ into your life is until you’ve actually done it.”

Cuatro de los cinco bautismos que se llevaron a cabo fueron el resultado directo de una campaña evangelística en Kaneohe. Con el fin de darles tiempo para resolver cualquier pregunta que pudieran haber tenido, el pastor Nelson estudió con las cinco personas y otras personas en las semanas previas al bautismo. Revisar su experiencia y responder a sus preguntas es un paso muy importante antes de meterlos al agua».
El lugar perfecto para bautizarse
Ubicado en el jardín de la iglesia, el Blue Papaya ha sido un lugar de renacimientos espirituales durante cuatro décadas. «Parte de la experiencia de bautizarse en Kaneohe es meterse en el agua misma», dijo Nelson, «Una de las fuentes de agua para la Papaya Azul es el agua directamente de la montaña y es terriblemente fría. Cada vez que entras en el agua jadeas por el frío, pero también te sientes renovado y vivo. Me gusta pensar en ello como un recordatorio del cambio repentino que ocurre cuando entregas tu vida a Jesucristo. De repente, te sientes tan vivo y casi no puedes respirar porque se siente tan abrumado. Añade una novedad a tu vida. Sigues siendo la misma persona, pero hay un nuevo despertar».
Siempre y cuando entiendas que Jesucristo pagó el precio y estés dispuesto a ir a donde él te guíe y aceptes el precio que él pagó, eso es todo lo que necesitas para el bautismo.
Reflexiones finales
Las ideas del pastor Nelson pueden darnos a todos algo en qué pensar. Ya sea que hayamos sido bautizados, vayamos a ser bautizados o vayamos a bautizar a otra persona, todos debemos considerar cuidadosamente el significado detrás de esa acción. Después de todo, es solo el primero de muchos grandes pasos que debemos dar en nuestro caminar con Jesús. Así que, aunque tener comprensión es importante, no esperes para dar ese paso. Como dice Nelson: «Nunca es demasiado temprano ni demasiado tarde para aceptar a Jesucristo. No es necesario que tengas todo resuelto antes de meterte al agua. Siempre y cuando entiendas que Jesucristo pagó el precio y estés dispuesto a ir a donde él te guíe y aceptes el precio que él pagó, eso es todo lo que necesitas para el bautismo. Si has esperado, no esperes más. No sabrás lo bueno que es aceptar a Cristo en tu vida hasta que realmente lo hayas hecho».
