At the close of the 2023 fall semester, Orangewood Academy launched an innovative initiative aimed to create ministry, college, and career-focused opportunities for its seventh- through 12th-graders. The preschool to 12th-grade academy considered the fact that they have international students and that families often go on vacation over the Christmas break. Recognizing this, they decided to move their finals one week ahead, allowing students to not only take their exams but also receive meaningful feedback from their teachers. With the last week of school now fully available, the team decided to launch a career and college readiness week.
Each day of the week, teachers and staff provided different activities and opportunities for students to help them anticipate college, make informed decisions about potential careers, and engage in ministry, as explained by Zaidy Olivarria, the assistant principal. Each activity was curated to be appropriate and relevant for the different grades. The school also partnered with OCGrace church and Relove church to provide ministry opportunities for the students, such as painting fences in an art garden and cleaning out the church closets.
Both students and faculty felt that this week was informative and meaningful. “Dedicating an entire week of school to getting a better understanding of how to apply for colleges, student athlete scholarships, what type of degrees there are, and how to sign up for government-funded programs to help further my education was definitely a big help,” said Victoria Perez, a 10th-grader. Kimberly Analco, another 10th-grader, said that this week helped her and others consider possible expectations for different careers and narrow down potential fields they may like to pursue in their future.
Olivarria explained that this initiative was successful because of the significant amount of teamwork that went into planning. More than a year of intentionality went into developing this event, and they are hopeful that this is something they can continue in the future. Congratulations to Orangewood Academy for finding dynamic new ways to engage and prepare their students for not only a life of service but of excellence.

Estudiantes de Orangewood se preparan para el éxito en college
Al cierre del semestre de otoño de 2023, Orangewood Academy lanzó una innovadora iniciativa destinada a crear oportunidades centradas en el ministerio, college y la carrera para sus estudiantes de séptimo a 12º grado. La academia consideró el hecho de que tienen estudiantes internacionales y que las familias a menudo salen durante las vacaciones de Navidad. Al darse cuenta de eso, decidieron adelantar sus exámenes finales una semana, lo que permitió a los estudiantes no solo tomar sus exámenes, sino también recibir comentarios significativos de sus maestros. Con la última semana de clases ahora completamente disponible, el equipo decidió lanzar una semana de preparación para la carrera y college.
Cada día de la semana, los maestros y el personal proporcionaron diferentes actividades y oportunidades para que los estudiantes anticipasen college, tomasen decisiones informadas sobre posibles carreras, como explicó Zaidy Olivarría, la subdirectora. Cada actividad fue seleccionada para ser apropiada y relevante para los diferentes grados. La escuela también se asoció con la iglesia OCGrace y la iglesia Relove para brindar oportunidades de ministrar a los estudiantes, como pintar cercas en un jardín de arte y limpiar los armarios de la iglesia.
Tanto los estudiantes como los maestros consideraron que esa semana fue informativa y significativa. «Dedicar una semana entera para comprender mejor cómo aplicar a colleges, becas para estudiantes atletas, qué tipo de carreras ofrece y cómo inscribirme en programas financiados por el gobierno para ayudar a continuar mi educación fue definitivamente una gran ayuda», dijo Victoria Pérez, estudiante de décimo grado. Kimberly Analco, otra estudiante de décimo grado, dijo que esa semana le ayudó y a otros a considerar las posibles expectativas para diferentes carreras y reducir las posibles opciones que les gustaría tener en el futuro.
Olivarría explicó que esa iniciativa fue exitosa debido a la gran cantidad de trabajo en equipo que se realizó en su planificación. Más de un año de intencionalidad se dedicó al desarrollo de ese evento y tienen la esperanza de que sea algo que puedan continuar en el futuro.
